A Pinot Worthy of the Mondavi Name
This is a review of the 2010 vintage, not the 2009, which I have not tasted. I do have a bottle of the 2007 vintage in the cellar, but I'm saving that. Let me start out by saying that there was a time when Robert Mondavi's Pinot Noir Reserve set a standard for West Coast Pinot Noirs that few others could match. This 2010 "Private Selection" isn't of that same opulent character, but it's close enough to warrant a 9 out of 10 rating. Alas, BevMo's impoverished 5-star scale makes no allowance for such finely tuned ratings, so that translates to a 4.5, which rounds up to 5. The endearing thing about this wine is that it’s reminiscent of its legendary predecessor, the Pinot Noir Reserve. It doesn’t have the same velvety finesse, the same complexity, or the same depth, but it has a similar character. There’s a Beaujolais like fruitiness at the start that gives way to an intriguing toasted or smoky quality, almost like a Madera --- a character that gives it more depth than I would find if I were judging it by the fruity qualities alone. It has a wonderful, classic Pinot Noir bouquet that calls to mind the aroma of an upper mid-range Mercurey, but the flavor is missing the Mercurey’s bold, oakey tannins. Even so, it will be interesting to see whether this wine improves with age. I’ll find out; it’s good enough and inexpensive enough to buy a case.

A bland pinot noir. Not bad flavor, but just not much flavor. A very light body wine that just didn't evoke anything other than easy drinking. Glad I got it on sale because I would hate to pay full price for this. Very disappointing and confirms my belief that Mondavi wines are over hyped.
